    C
huck Kaiser is a contemporary American batik artist based in Lancaster, PA. His work combines the analytical aspects of the batik process with an intuitive approach to color and design more commonly associated with painting. Alive with rhythm and color, Chuck's approach to batik signifies a clear  break from batik as "fine craft", to batik as a viable and intriguing art  medium.

A completely self taught artist, Chuck's work is what amounts to a personal journey into and beyond the limitations and boundaries of traditional batik. Perhaps it is his background in music (Chuck originally entered college as a music major- on string bass), or his philosophical training (he has a degree in Philosophy), but there is something within Chuck's work that speaks of freedom. From his subject matter, to his willingness to utilize materials normally foreign to the batik process, his work is alive with wit, rhythm and color, unencumbered by the limitations which supposedly exist within this ancient medium.

To this day, batik reveals itself to Chuck in small doses. With each new body of work, a fresh unexposed approach to the medium is unveiled. Whether it be resist manipulation through etching and temperature variations, or illogical approaches to color stacking, for Chuck, batik is a medium which holds countless untold possibilities.

Chuck's work is included in permanent collections throughout the US, including those of the Orlando International Airport, and the Center for Bioethics and Humanities at Syracuse University. His work is also included in private collections throughout the US as well as Norway, France, Argentina, Colombia (SA), and Canada. A frequent exhibitor at art festivals throughout the United States, Chuck has been fortunate enough to lay claim to numerous accolades including Best of Show and First Place honors at many of these juried events. Along with festivals, Chuck has also taken part in numerous group and solo exhibits. In 2001, Chuck's work was included in Eloise Piper's  "Batik for Artists and Quilters", an excellent reference book for the professional and amateur alike.
